HI Eric,

I am copying a post from another Blog and asking for your help...can you help us encourage rescuers to share the story...I think that getting on Oprah would really help the cause...PLEASE CONSIDER THIS REQUEST...an animal lover feeling helpless in NYC

Someone recently mentioned emailing Oprah and asking her to do a show on the animal rescue situation. She's actually doing a show on Katrina rescuers (the human kind) and is asking for participants to the show. Perhaps, if she won't be doing a show specifically on animal rescue, maybe at least half of the rescuers can be animal oriented. Check out the following link to show your interest: https://www.oprah.com/plugger/templates/BeOnTheShow.jhtml?action=respond&plugId=190200002

just for the record, at least 2 to 3 dgs were stolen on September 20th from HSLA. (I was there to witness). I would be surprised if more hadn't since then. i would believe the stories. The neighbors aren't too kind.

This was posted on petfinder in response to story about the Florida shelter that adopted out a dog that the original family wants back:

Was this dog adopted out from Peggy Adams Rescue League? If so, I may be able to help get this dog back to its' rightful owner.

Just last night I sent HSUS a complaint about this shelter.

127 pets were air-lifted here in West Palm Beach and were received by Peggy Adams Rescue League, then distributed them to various other shelters. When I called them, last week, I told them I was asked to obtain a list for PF on what animals they had. I faxed the list of intake #'s to each shelter and asked to list the pets they had that matched those numbers. Per a phone conversation, I was told they were not giving out any more information and instructed the other shelters to NOT give out the information either. I also know they have not posted ALL of the animals on PF, and adopted out before the 30 day period as they arrived here Sept 21.

Please email me at ooskph@yahoo.com with specifics and I will see what I can do to help. Even if I cannot get the dog back, I will testify if this goes to court.

That is - only if the shelter that the dog was adopted from is one that is connected with the Peggy Adams group.

Hi... wasn't sure what to do in this case. Hopefully someone will be able to help... I was volunteering in LA the second time at the DCI P/E Farm in Jackson, LA. While there, I was calling pet's owners' gotten from reverse lookups with addresses of where animals were picked up from. I had been leaving messages to call my personal cell phone # (I was using it to make calls as the land phone line had not yet been put in at this particular emergency shelter yet), if I got answering machine and/or voice mail. Upon my return home, I received a couple of calls in return concerning pets that owners wanted to claim. One in particular, who actually turned in his two dogs for care before he evacuated, was one of the numbers that I had called and left a message for.
He still to this day has not been contacted again by the emergency shelter, as we were trying to do to locate pet owners. I spoke with him today, tried to pull up info on the Katrina.petfinder.com with the animals' names, and their owners street name and New Orleans. No info was listed that could be pulled up. So the only thing I could do was to give him the contact phone number for the shelter, so he could contact them with his and his dogs' information. I had asked him if they were wearing collars, and he replied that the persons who took the dogs actually removed the collars and gave them back to him.
I know that at least one of his dogs is there, otherwise I would not have had the phone # to call for the owner. Hopefully the paperwork on these dogs still have the owner's name and phone number so that the emergency shelter is able to locate the dogs. The owner has his documentation, including birth certificates and pics for both dogs.
I just think that as an owner turn-in because of the evacuation, these two dogs should have been allowed to keep their collars on for quicker ID purposes... what were these people thinking??
Hopefully, all of the info that the owner gave when he turned the dogs in are still with the dogs. I did not have access to full paperwork, only the first page with name and number of possible owner, and copy of pic taken at intake.
Heck, I am not even sure that I am asking anything... but maybe just venting a little. I know with the amount of animals rescued, quite a few will never be returned to their original owners, because of inadequate record keeping and removal of collars that could lead to quicker ID.
Thanks for reading... Wendy

Still looking for Candy the Akita

Candy is 5 years old with black guard hair and a silverish undercoat. She has a white chest, the tip of her tail is white; she has white toes, with the right front paw having less white than the others. She has a dark circle on her tongue which can be seen when she yawns or when her mouth is opened. She is (was) wearing a black nylon collar with her rabies tags this number is 424391, her license, and a yellow tag containing her Home Again microchip number this # is 4025766B59 along with an 800 number to contact Home Again. She belongs to Jason who is confined to a wheelchair; Candy has never left his side in five years. They need to be reunited with each other.

This info is from the Candy's owner direct.
My name is Jason. I am a c-5/c-6 quadriplegic. I could not take my wheelchair, yet alone my dog because the person who took me would not allow me to put my dog in his boat. Candy was left home inside but may have gotten out. The house is at 5001 Columbia in New Orleans, Pontchartrain Park subdivision, 70126. Landmarks include Southern University at New Orleans, Wesley Barrow baseball stadium, Pontchartrain Park, itself and its golf course. The front of the house is on Columbia and Congress. The back is on Congress and Hayne. Candy is a 5-year-old female Akita with black guard hair, silverish undercoat. She has a white chest, the tip of her tail is white; she has white toes, with the right front paw having less white than the others. She has a dark circle on her tongue which can be seen when she yawns or when her mouth is opened. She is wearing a black nylon collar with her rabies tags, her license, and a yellow tag containing her "Home Again" microchip number, along with an 800 number to contact Home Again. She may not come, but if you can leave food and water directly at the house.

Someone has been to the home. There is an active search in shelters and on petfinder, in New Orleans to locate Candy.

This is in or around the PontchartrainPark subdivision of New Orleans. This dog was left at home on the corner of Congress and Columbia. The house is at 5001 Columbia in New Orleans, PontchartrainPark subdivision, 70126.

So where is the LASPCA? Nowhere. Nothing has happened since Sept 30th when they took back over the operation. Ask the police who they call -- Jane, WD, Mutshack. The state vet closed the animal rescue right in the very middle of it. And below is the kind of crap WE have to take care of. LASPCA and the 8 people they have are gonna manage finishing the crisis out? THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING. The state's people should be outraged at the total incompetence of The State Vet. I have it from people in that office THAT SHE HAS BARELY LEFT HER OFFICE LET ALONE GONE INTO THE FEILD TO SEE WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENENING. She made comments in a phone conference the other day that proved to me that she has no clue what is going on. This was pertaining to the list of owner call in...She actually thought that it had been used from day one....I am going spend an entire post soon explaining how the list was not used in force until almost 4 weeks into the crisis...and then it took outside groups to do it.

Below is message which I CONFIRMED w/Jane Garrison as of 21/10/05 b4 posting on this Forum. If this has been posted on NOLA before I do apologize. Is this the mentality we are dealing with?? P.S. Jane is will confirm exact address to press charges per reply to me moments ago as of Friday, Oct 21, 9:39PM EST
"We rescued a dog last night who was put out with the trash from her house!Reportedly, the people came home to clean out their house and the dog was incritical condition...skin and bones, could not stand, sores all over herbody, etc.. They put her out on the sidewalk with the trash! Thankfully aneighbor saw the whole thing and called us. Needless to say we have themedia at the vet clinic right now and we will pursue cruelty charges".Jane

Those people in West Palm are the worst. People were calling me about them from day 1. They had the small dogs adopted out before the plane hit the ground. Serious.
They are horrible. What more would you expect from an exclusive Palm Beach Pet Resort.

Tell this to the state vet who yesterday claimed that all addresses had been gotten to....

Eric

im going through a list of 1300 records right now with a few people, its a list dorothy sent me with messed up addresses, basically we are dialing any and all #'s to get update from owners and shooting those were not sure of to Jessica( winn dixie) marilyn sent jessica a list of like 8 addresses last night, and today they pulled a living animal out of each and every one of those addresses, so we are scrambling now to call up every available # on this list now, and its so time consuming-theres only 4 of us, but let me know what I can do, and I'll let you know if I can make time, depends on exactly when, and how long, then again im blabbering now because im a little stressed out, if you want to call me, its probably easier to clearly talk about it on the phone- 718-236-4006

sorry for my crazy rant but I just got through talking to about 50 owners-most of whom rescued their own animals after 4 weeks as no rescuers ever got to their addresses on this list.

I am doing as much here as on the ground. I promise. I am connecting people to other people and it make a difference.

For instance the Federal Govt now has a dedicated rep on the ground and I spent a 1/2 hour today explaining to her the disconnect between what is happening in field vs all the "feel good" BS she has been given by people who have yet to leave and office. Some of the stuff she has been told is downright ridiculous.

PLEASE PLEASE READ PASADOS SAFE HAVEN KATRINA UPDATE ASAP!!

EDNA's animal shelter in Baxter Co. Arkansas has been raided by the local Sheriff's dept. which seized dozens of pitbulls which had specifically been deemed non-agressive by several rescue groups. The Sheriff's dept. claims these dogs are "vicious" and will be euthanized!

At 7:37 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eric - maybe you could bump this up to a main topic? The "tomorrow" they talk about is today.
*************

URGENT UPDATE: 10/21 8:38pm pm PST
Your help is needed NOW!

CROSSPOST WIDELY PLEASE!

Dozens of pitbulls, who we rescued, walked, hugged, and cared for for days, were transferred to a shelter in Arkansas named EDNA (Every Dog Needs a Home) after the Humane Society of Louisiana, as well as Best Friends had sent animals there. We also had volunteers travel to EDNA and return stating that animals were well-cared for. After these credible recommendations, PasadoRescue chose to place non-aggressive pitbulls with EDNA.

From what we can tell, Ms. Hanson has been under attack for years for caring for pitbulls by various local Arkansas groups, warranted or not. Tonight, spurred on by these local groups, sheriff's deputies raided Ms. Hanson's facilities and charged her with animal cruelty. We understand they are threatening to kill dogs tomorrow.

We understand that the veterinarian who assisted the sheriff in the raid stated these animals are vicious. We know, for a fact, that the animals that we transported to this facility were on our laps, able to be hugged, loved, fed by hand. This is untrue. He also stated that none of these animals had been treated by a veterinarian prior to transport to AR. Also not true. ALL the animals transported were all under the care of licensed veterinarians. We have records to prove it.

If these animals were not well cared for by Ms. Hanson, then we agree that animals need to be removed. And PasadoRescue will gladly take care of all transport and care. But NO LAW ENFORCEMENT ENTITY has a right to kill these animals. These are the pets of hurricane victims. People are still trying to find their animals.

You need to call the Baxter County Arkansas Sheriff and Arkansas State Attorney General's Office and tell them that killing these animals is killing someone's pet. Someone's property. And they will be legally liable.
Sheriff John Montgomery:

Fax: 870-425-1669

Mike Beebe, Arkansas Attorney General Tel 1-800-482-8982
E-mail here.

Read the letter sent to the Arkansas State Attorney General and to Sheriff John Baxter here.

Dear Eric:
It was posted somewhere that you were to be involved in a conference call with FEMA, state vet, HSUS, etc.

Here's an issue to raise in addition to the multitude of others:
1. there is help needed for the horsres and livestock of the lower flooded parishes---need only ask Debra Barlow. She's been running weekend missions out of North Louisiana.
2. BIG problem for pet owning evacuees shipped far far far away --- they're being denied FEMA housing that takes pets. FEMA must put in place housing contracts with places that take pets. FEMA DOES take pets at the FEMA Trailer Parks -- they call them MH/TT (Mobile Home/ Temporary Trailers). But, that doesn't do an evacuee any good if s/he shipped off to Minnesota (like the guy I'm working with, now).

VOLUNTEERS DESPERATELY ARE NEEDED:

cross post from http://lamardixon.doghousearts.com/lamardixon/

"Our mission is also winding down - Deborah is our last scheduled traveler. That doesn't mean there still isn't plenty of work to do, it just means that our pool of volunteers has run dry. If you know ANYBODY who might be interested in going, we can certainly help with information and contacts, probably offer up a little money, and I even have a couple of air travel donors waiting in the wings. Here is the latest plea from Jane Garrison (the original coordinator from Lamar-Dixon), who is back in business after her feral cat bite incident and resultant hospital stay. This message was forwarded to me this morning."
Jane's message reads:
From Jane Garrison: "WE STILL NEED HELP. I will pay the travel cost (airline or gas) for 10 people to get to New Orleans right away. Animal Control officers or Search and Rescue people are best. Please contact me at JaneGarrison@comcast.net Thanks!"

ANother cross-post for help:
"Horses across the southern parishes need help:
"Drivers Needed Shreveport,LA

please cross post ... Hopeful Haven Equine Rescue in Shreveport, LA is desperately in need of drivers with trucks and trailers to join a convoy this weekend delivering feed to starving horses in Abbeville. There is also a great need for range cubes for cattle, horse feed, panels, barbed wire, and t-posts to repair fencing. If you can help with either or both please contact annmcm111@charter.net . To view the damage in the affected area http://coastal.er.usgs.gov/hurricanes/rita/photo-comparisons/cameron.html""

State Vet assistant Littlefield apparently has told Debra Barlow (who is with hopefulhaven that there is NO crisis for the horses and livestock)---same story, different animal.

another cross post:
"Belle Chasse shelter by cici, 10/21/05 22:07 ET
The Plaquemine parish hurricane animal shelter is in dire need of volunteers. There are no official rescue organizations there as of yesterday. If you would like to help, the shelter is on Main St. in Belle Chasse. I think there might even be a paid position for Plaquemine parish residents at the shelter.

I believe they have 4 volunteers trying to care for 150 rescued animals. Please forward to everyone you know--they need help now!"

Hello! Here are today’s “Daily 5” missing hurricane pets. There are 4 dogs and one cat. Thanks for your continued care and support of hurricane animals, and thanks for taking the time to view these emails. I’m sending five animals a day to organizations, as I receive requests from desperate owners who can’t find their pets. We are advising them to continue checking Petfinder.com, but many have limited computer access. I appreciate everything you’re doing. If you know the whereabouts of any of these animals, please email the contact people. If you haven’t seen them, there is no need to reply.

All the best to you!

Have you seen these animals?

I want to research what happened with that airlift and Peggy Adams so called rescue. I want to see who was involved in this. Thousands of animals were taken out of NO by dog fighters and brokers looking to make a fast buck, with no intention of ever returning the animals to their owners. I know some of the ppl who did this and we have DNA'd them. I just DNA'd Peggy too. Can't be be prosecuted for violating La. laws? I know she can be sued civilly, but this does violate state, if not federal laws. I'll bet I can dig up some more on them for federal charges even...I'd like to poke around and see if I can. I have some particular laws in mind...Damn, I wish we could put all this info together and get someone to do a GREAT expose on it...Nightline, Frontline, Animal Planet...what do you guys think?

BTW saw Katrina pets being advertised on Craigslist for sale, and heard of some so called rescuers being busted for selling them out of Walmart parking lots on the way back from NO. Most every place that got these dogs have just ended up selling them. I know of so few rescues doing the right thing...and we're one of them. We're in no hurry and hopefully can find their owners though it's harder since these came without any papers...from the very beginning of this fiasco..

I think that is a terrific idea about asking Oprah to host a show regarding the animals being rescued and the ones that desperately need to be rescued because they are starving and running in packs at night, etc. I think this would draw alot of people's attention to this problem, and more people would donate money or even go to volunteer and rescue the dogs.

It appears that Louisiana is getting serious about investigating
rescue groups & storm pets taken out of the state. There is talk
that the State Proscuter's dog was "rescued" & lost in the system...

Martha Littlefield, Assistant Veterinarian for LA is interested in
contacting persons who took animals across state lines without
posting information in the national databases we've been using to
reuinite pets with rightful owners:

WTF??? I NOTFIED ALL OF THEM AND TOLD THEM ABT THE TRASH TAKING THOUSANDS OF DOGS OUT OF NOLA AND THE DOG FIGHTERS, THEY COULD CARE LESS...DOG FIGHTERS ARE STILL BRINGING TRUCKLOADS OF KATRINA DOGS EVERY WEEKEND INTO CANADA. SO NOW, WHAT? A LOT TOO LATE!!!!!..ALL THESE DOGS ENDED UP SUFFERING WAY MORE THAN IF THEY HAD DIED AS THE RESULT OF THE HURRICANES! THERE WAS NO SYSTEM...
PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO TAKEN THEIR PETS WITH THEM...BOTTOM LINE END OF STORY...THAT'S THE ONLY WAY THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. HOTELS HOUSING THESE PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE FEDERAL FUNDS DENIED TO THEM IF THEY DON'T ACCEPT A WELL MANNERED DOG IN THEIR FACILITY WITH THE OWNER/VICTIMS. ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED! You recently had someone make an anonymous claim that Joan Stambaugh was DNA'ed by most rescues.

Such comments are libelous unless the person stating this has done a survery of "most rescues" and has written comments to back this up.

They do not have this because it is not true...such remarks are simply the venom spewed by those more interested in pursing their own little private agenda than helping animals.

Joan is saving animals that would have died until she stepped in and worked with the Pike County Shelter.

If these remarks are true...I challenge "anonymous" to provide us with proof....and I know we will be waiting a very long time...like forever...because such remarks are nothing but hateful and libelous remarks.
